Today was our day for orientation with the program. I started with a run around campus with one of my friends here, which was beautiful. There is a park in the middle which looked almost magical in the morning fog, with its spindly trees and winding paths. The university looks similar to an American university, but the campus has many steep and narrow roads. We ran up hills so steep I was waiting for the pavement to slide off! What I find especially interesting are the many bike racks filled with bikes on a campus with such dangerous hills and a multitude of stairs. I have not yet seen a bike in use.
While many things are similar, one thing that is quite different (apart from the language, whose pronunciations and letter formation thoroughly confused me during a lecture today...so far my skills are limited to about a 30 second conversation about my name, country, and the denominations of the bills in my wallet) are the showers. For one, there is a gap under the door which allows the water to run through and flood the area around the sink, so that one has the chance to unintentionally continue the foot-bathing process later while brushing teeth. Also, the low height of the shower-head has provided encouragement for working on back and neck flexibility.
Unfortunately, there is not a place to insert a memory card on the computer, so I will post pictures when I get back instead. Tomorrow we will be going to tour different neighborhoods and temples in downtown Seoul, so I will tell you about that then!
